My Life as a CTO - Trust Leadership
Every manager has a different leadership style. During my time at Facebook, I had at least five different managers, each with their unique way of leading. In a startup environment, where there isn't a uniform set of guidelines, a leader's style is even more dependent on their personal approach. After some reflection, I decided to name my own style 'Trust Leadership.' As the name implies, my leadership largely builds on the foundation of trust. For me, this is not only the most comfortable but also the most effective way to manage.
My Life as a CTO - Technology (Daily Work)
Okay, you've successfully made it through Day 1 and are now thinking about the hundred things on your plate. How should you prioritize them? As a Tech Leader, although you may really enjoy coding, if there are already excellent engineers on the team who can help with development, you need to focus more on other high-level tasks.
My Life as a CTO - Technology (Day 1)
Since the title 'CTO' includes the word 'Technology,' it's essential that this series of articles starts with Technology! I divide this part into two main categories: the first category is what you should pay attention to on your 'First Day' if you're starting from scratch, and the second category is 'Daily Life,' what a Tech leader should do every day and where most of their focus should be.
My Life as a CTO - Intro
Since I left Facebook in 2020 and took on the title of CTO, and now over four years later as I step down from this role, I still can't fully grasp what this title truly entails. When I first left Facebook, I was just a Tech Lead. I knew how to code, how to build products, and how to lead a small engineering team. But a CTO? Chief Technology Officer—a grand title that seemed like a heavy burden was placed on me, and yet no one had ever told me how to do this job.
Be the Women in Tech
Although nearly 40% of all privately held firms in the United States are founded by women, only 2% of U.S. venture capital financing is allocated to female-founded firms, according to Harvard Research.
Don’t Let Emotion Affect Work Efficiency
It's ironic that I intended to write a clear-cut article to tell everyone how not to let emotions affect work efficiency, but in reality, the person most often defeated by this is myself. This article can only serve as a warning to inspire both myself and everyone else, hoping to constantly remind myself of the frightfulness of the emotional beast.
Crisis Management
Life is always full of surprises, and things can't always go as smoothly as expected. When unexpected events occur, I believe that, aside from crisis management itself, good communication and managing others' expectations are where a reliable engineer can truly shine.
How to Manage Expectations
In the workplace, the key to making your perceived effectiveness feel doubled, I believe, is whether you manage others' expectations well.
Extra Communication is Always Better than No Communication
Engineering is a profession that seldom lists communication as a basic requirement in the job description, unlike business functions or PM roles. There seems to be a stereotype that engineers don't need to communicate much, which I believe is a completely wrong perception.
The Key to Distinguishing an Excellent Engineer from an Average One
The key to distinguishing an excellent engineer from an average one, in my opinion, is whether they can make others feel they are reliable.
To Be a Good Engineer, Knowing How to Code is Not Enough
This idea deeply influenced me during my time at Facebook and continues to shape my expectations for engineers at Cooby.
